Apple Watch Series 6 Rumors: New Smartwatch Not Debuting With MicroLED Display

Gambar
KEY POINTS The Apple Watch Series 6 is said to feature MicroLED displays A leaker with somewhat accurate track record says it won't The Series 6 will feature OLED panels, the leaker said Recent rumors about the Apple Watch Series 6 claim that it will have a new kind of display called MicroLED, along with other enhancements. A leak from an anonymous leaker of details about Apple's products, however, reveals that it won't feature the new component. According to a Twitter tipster named @L0vetodream, the "Apple Watch [Series 6] will continue [to] use the display from JDI." The leaker did not indicate what display this is, but it's an OLED panel, MacRumors reported. JDI, along with other suppliers, has supplied Apple with OLED panels for use in its Apple Watch models, MacRumors noted. JDI, however, has seen a steady increase in the volume of display orders. It has also enjoyed a $200 million investment from Cupertino so that it can produce more OLED display units f

Not Just a Pretty Face: The Fascinating History of Smart Watches

Anyone who has worn a Fitbit or a similar device tends to feel a near-religious compulsion to complete the obligatory 10,000 steps per day. The figure of 10,000 steps isn't enormously scientific: it was actually created for a primitive pedometer in Japan in the 1960s, amid a nationwide health obsession during the run-up to the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. The device, known as a "manpo-kei", translated roughly as a "10,000-step counter". But there is still little evidence that this is the "perfect" number (as compared to, say, 12,000), beyond Fitbit's distinctive tingle (and on-screen fireworks) to tell the wearer they've hit their goal. Research by PwC (Pricewaterhouse Coopers) in 2016 showed that health was the number one reason for users to buy a wearable device. This demand for ever more health information has defined new generations of smartwatches. As heart rate monitors became more practical to put into devices, these have offered wearers new hor

Social-distancing smart watches and plexiglass beach boxes: Old and new technologies are being employed to keep people apart

Gambar
As countries emerge from lockdowns there is a worldwide rush to fit shops, offices, and public places with the tools needed to enforce social distancing. Sales of plexiglass screens have surged and technologies from social distancing wristbands to scanners tracking the capacity of rooms are in high demand as people look for safe routes out of lockdown. The U.K. government announced on Monday that lockdown measures would further ease from the beginning of June, opening car showrooms, outdoor markets, and all shops later in the month. Meanwhile all 50 U.S. states have begun reopening leaving businesses looking at measures to keep workers and customers safe. While high-tech solutions are proving popular, simple see-through plastic sheets have seen surging sales and plexiglass sheet manufacturers have reported demand rocketing. Supermarkets, cinemas and even airplanes are introducing plastic sheets to keep customers and employees apa

I Miss Microsoft's Smartwatches That Were Too Smart for Their Time

Gambar
Apple was the first company to make smartwatches a product consumers actually wanted, but there was a time, not too long ago, when Microsoft could have defined the future of wearables. The company's SPOT platform took a deceptively simple but clever approach to wireless connectivity years before technologies like Bluetooth, wifi, and even LTE were commonplace. It also came with tradeoffs, however, that ultimately doomed the platform, but not before it succeeded in demonstrating to the world the potential of smart wearables. You can argue that the multi-function calculator watches from the likes of Casio that defined '80s nerd culture were smartwatches, but today we tend to reserve that label for wearables that offer smartphone connectivity and wireless access to remote content. Eleven years before the first-generation Apple Watch was released, watches powered by the Microsoft SPOT platform—short for Smart Personal Objects Technology—arrived and were the first to wirelessly del

Apple's smart glasses will disappoint

Gambar
Everyone is talking about Apple's smart glasses this week. Much of the chatter is contradictory, surprising and exciting. So let me clarify what's going on and give you some context and perspective so you can plan accordingly. The Kuo predictions Longtime Apple prognosticator with a good track record, Ming-Chi Kuo, says Apple Glasses will launch in 2022 at the earliest. The Gurman predictions Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, who also has a great track record of getting advanced information about Apple products, says Apple is working on two face-based gadgets. One that looks like bulky VR glasses aiming for a 2022 release and another, which is pure AR and looks like regular eyeglasses is shooting for 2023. Both these predictions focus on timing, which is especially difficult right now because of the unpredictable impact of the coronavirus pandemic. Into this uncertainty comes some very detailed predictions from a single source. The Prosser

Fitbit Is Studying Whether Its Watches Can Detect Coronavirus Early

Gambar
© Photo: Victoria Song (Gizmodo) Fitbit owners wear their watches and fitness trackers day and night, which gives the company tons of data about their health. Fitbit is now launching a study to determine whether all of that data can be used to diagnose covid-19 before any noticeable symptoms—including fever and cough—even begin. The Fitbit Covid-19 Study, launched today, will collect data from volunteers that will be used to build an algorithm that could eventually make its way into a covid-19 diagnostic tool directly on Fitbit devices. Fitbit data is already being used in research being conducted by Scripps and Stanford Medicine as to whether wearable devices can detect covid-19. But those studies aren't being used to build diagnostic algorithms the way the company's own study will be. Fitbit owners in the U.S. and Canada can sign up for the study in the Fitbit app on their smartphones. The company is looking specifically for people over 21 who either c

This Fossil Smartwatch is Cheaper Than an Apple Watch and Fitbit and Has Way More Features Too

The two brands dominate the smartwatch and fitness tracking market, but there's a new contender in the fray that deserves a second look. Fossil's Gen 4 Smartwatch came out last year and it's earned rave reviews, not only for its long list of features, but also because it actually looks like a watch, as opposed to well, a clunky tracking device. Right now, Amazon has the Fossil Gen 4 discounted to just $129. That's a whopping 53% off its regular price of $275. Buy: Fossil Gen 4 Smartwatch $129.99 The unisex smartwatch features a stainless steel touchscreen that lets you track everything from your steps to heart-rate. Best apps for Apple Watch: Start with these 9 native apps

Gambar
We just celebrated the fifth anniversary of the Apple Watch in April, and it's clear that the device that was originally intended to be an iPhone for your wrist, chock-full of third-party apps, has transitioned into a useful fitness tracker. And its native apps have proved more useful than any app you can download. While companies including Amazon, eBay, Target and TripAdvisor no longer support Apple Watch apps, it doesn't really matter -- we have our phones, tablets and laptops to check those. What does matter is the built-in Activity tracker, Messages and Phone apps -- the things we want to have on hand for a quick and convenient glance.  "The watch is really about convenience," said Ray Wang, principal analyst and founder of Co

Stanford Scientist Links Smart Watch Data To Disease Detection

Gambar
© Steve Fisch/Stanford Medicine Michael Snyder heads up a Stanford University lab that studies data taken from wearables and its connection to user's health. PALO ALTO, CA – Michael Snyder may be unique in the fact that he can be found wearing three smart watches at any given time. If one adds the Oura smart ring that can be found on the hand of Stanford's director of genomics and personalized medicine into the mix, the amount of electronic health tracking that is going on his health registers off the chart. But could a smart watch determine if a person has contracted the coronavirus? Snyder, for one, believes there is a very distinct possibility it can. His hypothesis stems from the fact that not long ago, Snyder used smart watch technology to detect that he suffers from Lyme disease. Even before he showed symptoms, Snyder relied on a reading that his pulse had dropped and that his heart rate had changed to determine he was likely a candidate

Can a Smart Watch Detect Covid-19?

Gambar
The notification popped up without warning just as I was syncing the Whoop tracker I was testing: The tracker had a new metric, respiratory rate. Truthfully, I almost ignored it. But the notification used the phrase covid-19, and my eyes widened. At 7 a.m., I was bleary-eyed, under-caffeinated, and still adjusting to my new reality of sheltering in place. But, from what I could tell, this niche tracker was telling me that there was a possible correlation between my sleeping respiratory rate and the novel coronavirus dominating headlines. Was this real or marketing bullshit? The Whoop may have been the first wearable tech company to alert me to the relationship between metrics on a wearable and covid-19, but it certainly wasn't the last. It seemed wearable companies big and small all had the same idea: that their devices might be useful in the fight against covid-19. It looked promising—a logical progression of how wearables in the past few years have increasingly blurred the boundary
