Smartwatches and Luxury Watches Battle for Your Wrist

Holly Black: Welcome to Morningstar. I'm Holly Black. With me is Jelena Sokolova. She is an analyst at Morningstar in Amsterdam. Hello. Jelena Sokolova: Hi, thanks for having me. Black: So, you've been looking at the smartwatch and luxury-watch sectors. Can you tell us a bit about the growth of the smartwatch in recent years? Sokolova: Yeah. So, the smartwatch has started off in 2013 and since that moment the growth, of course, has been quite strong. In 2015, the smartwatch volume sold were a bit less than 20 million pieces, and now it was above 70 million in 2019. So, that's quite a spectacular growth over recent years. Black: And some people think obviously, with our reliance on technology, this smartwatch could make the luxury watch obsolete. Do you think it's a threat? Sokolova: We clearly see that as a threat on the lower-end side of the Swiss watch industry. The Swiss watch is priced below $1,000 at retail value. They have been down by around 20% since 2015

Huawei reportedly set to release Mate Watch loaded with HarmonyOS

Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei's Consumer Business Group, unveils the HarmonyOS, or Hongmeng in Chinese, during the Huawei Developer Conference held in Dongguan, south China's Guangdong Province, Aug. 9, 2019. Photo: Xinhua Chinese tech company Huawei is reportedly set to release its Mate Watch loaded with HarmonyOS, a self-developed operating system that aims to challenge Google's monopoly amid the US crackdown.  Industry insiders said the move signals the firm is one step closer to completing a hardware ecosystem that will lay a foundation for HarmonyOS on Huawei smartphones in the future. The Mate Watch is expected to be released at the same time as Huawei's Mate 40, according to industry media. If that is true, it would be the first Huawei smart watch operated by HarmonyOS.  The operating system has already been applied to Huawei's notebook, pad, router and other intelligent devices like TVs.  Huawei had not responded to an interview request from the Global Times

Dutch-Based AI Company Sightcorp Spearheads COVID-19 Retail Solutions with Smart Store Traffic Light System

Gambar
The smart screen traffic light system combines AI and Digital Signage to make entrance flow management in environments like retail manageable and safe in COVID times. During the course of this pandemic, retailers and other public venues have been hacking together communication around safety measures and guidelines leaving shoppers feeling unsafe and uninformed. The impact of Covid-19 has significantly changed how we go about our daily business, heightening awareness of germs and contagions and making us reconsider all the surfaces we encounter. As the lockdowns begin to ease and a return to normality is within grasp, core public infrastructures such as businesses, transportation and retail are recognizing the need to adopt a new and consistent approach to providing services with C19 regulations in mind. Technology can be used as a flexible and effective tool to address this problem and to actively prevent the rise of new infections. Figure 1. Examples of hacked solutions in Ret

The NBA is offering players a ‘smart’ ring to track Covid. But does it even work?

Gambar
The NBA, which hopes to restart the season July 30, says it is offering players a ring whose maker claims it can track a user's health data and might even predict if users are about to show symptoms of coronavirus infection. But there's not much information yet on how well the device, which has embedded electronics, works. The $299 Oura ring is designed to monitor sleep, pulse, movement, heart activity and temperature, according to the company's website. Some doctors are lukewarm about its potential. "There is not a lot of data on it right now. There have been some studies that I've seen — most of the studies are published by the device manufacturers," Dr. Darria Long, an emergency room physician and clinical assistant professor at the University of Tennessee, told CNN. Other doctors contacted by CNN said there was too little solid information about the device for them to comment on it. The ring is one of about a

Rape plan foiled by smart watch should garner up to 10 years: Crown

Gambar
Would-be rapist John Joseph Macindoe — whose crime was thwarted when his intended target used her smart watch to summon help — still sexually fantasizes about his victim, court heard Tuesday. Crown prosecutor Rose Greenwood said more than a year after Macindoe was caught "red-handed" in the woman's apartment when police came to her rescue, he remains infatuated with her. Greenwood argued Macindoe's crimes, including breaking into the woman's condo for the purpose of sexually assaulting her, justify a sentence of eight to 10 years. "This is the type of crime that women fear the most," Greenwood told provincial court Judge Margaret Keelaghan. But defence counsel Rebecca Snukal said a sentence of less than four years, which would allow Keelaghan to place Macindoe on probation for three years, would allow him to get community-based sex-offender treatment. Snukal said with credit of 22 months for pre-sentencing credit, Keelaghan could sentenc

Apple Watch finally gets sleep tracking plus hand-washing feature

Gambar
Apple is bringing one of the most asked for features to the Apple Watch: Sleep tracking. Yes, after years of fans begging for the ability to track their sleep using the company's smart watch, Apple (APPL) has finally caved. The feature will be able to tell you how long you've slept each night, and how restful your sleep was. When tracking your sleep, your watches display will turn off, and if you want to check it, it will only provide you with the time. This is likely meant to save battery life throughout the night. Apple says the Apple Watch will be able to follow your sleep using its accelerometer to keep track of your movement throughout the night. When you wake up, Apple says watchOS 7 will display important information from your sleep, as well as how much battery your watch has left. Apple says it will also add a Wind Down notification to your iPhone's home screen. The idea is to let you know when you should start getting ready for bed, and provide users with

Best apps for Apple Watch: These 9 are the only ones you'll ever really need

Gambar
We celebrated the fifth anniversary of the Apple Watch in April, and it's clear that the device that was originally intended to be an iPhone for your wrist, chock-full of third-party apps, has transitioned into a useful fitness tracker. And its native apps have proved more useful than any app you can download. While companies including Amazon, eBay, Target and TripAdvisor no longer support Apple Watch apps, it doesn't really matter -- we have our phones, tablets and laptops to check those. What does matter is the built-in Activity tracker, Messages and Phone apps -- the things we want to have on hand for a quick and convenient glance.  "The watch is really about convenience," said Ray Wang, principal analyst an

UCLA: Smart Watch Add-On Could Signal Changes in Users’ Health

Gambar
Share this article: UCLA engineers announced Wednesday they have designed a thin adhesive film that could upgrade a smartwatch into a health-monitoring system that looks for chemical indicators in sweat to give a real-time snapshot of what is happening inside the body. UCLA has applied for a patent on the technology, in which the disposable, double-sided film attaches to the underside of a smartwatch and collects and analyzes the chemical makeup of droplets of sweat. The watch-facing side turns the chemical signals into electrical ones that can be read, processed and displayed on the smartwatch. Researchers designed a custom smartwatch and app to work with the system, but the concept could someday be applied to popular models of smartwatches, according to postdoctoral scholar Bo Wang, one of the co-lead authors of the study. Wang said researchers incorporated enzymatic-sensing layers in the film to target glucose and lactate, which indicate body metabo

Don't rely on smart watches to spot heart rhythm disorders

Gambar
By IANS LONDON: As smart watches like Apple Watch come with capabilities to identify common heart rhythm disorder like atrial fibrillation (AFib), researchers have warned that at the moment, wearables do not have a defined place in such risk assessment. The Smart Watch market is expected to grow to 929 million connected devices by next year. There is evidence that devices can help detect atrial fibrillation but the accuracy varies. "There still is a problem with a lot of false positives, where the device claims a person has atrial fibrillation, but they do not," said Professor Jens Cosedis Nielsen of Aarhus University Hospital, Denmark. "Furthermore, if a smartwatch picks up 30 minutes of incidental atrial fibrillation in a person with no symptoms, we have no data on whether anticoagulation prevents stroke in this situation," he explained in a paper published in EP Europace, a journal of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC)

From tracking activity to tracing a virus: Smart watches could become our early detectors

Gambar
Can your Fitbit or Apple Watch detect a coronavirus infection before the onset of symptoms? Researchers are increasingly looking at these devices and other such wearables as a possible early warning system for the deadly virus. Last month, scientists at the West Virginia University Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute said they had created a digital platform that can detect COVID-19 symptoms up to three days before they show up using the Oura ring, a wearable fitness and activity tracker. An app developed by the researchers uses artificial intelligence to forecast the onset of COVID-19 related symptoms such as fever, coughing, breathing difficulties and fatigue, with over 90% accuracy, according to the university. The researchers said the system could offer clues of infection in people not yet showing symptoms – helping address one of the problems in detection and containment of the deadly outbreak. Separately, Scripps Research Institute has enrolled mor

Jaeger-LeCoultre Reawakens its Alarm Watch Legacy With New Master Control Memovox Models

Text size Jaeger-LeCoultre has released two next-generation Master Control Memovox alarm watches, carrying on its mid-20th-century legacy in the audible watchmaking specialty. The Master Control Memovox (US$11,600) and Master Control Memovox Timer (US$15,600) are the newest members of the Memovox family, which dates back to 1950, when post-war watchmakers strived to develop more practical and useful functions for wristwatches.  The new incarnations have been upgraded with the latest technology and functionality, while preserving the collection's retro vibe. "We just keep the spirit and the design of that period of time, but we improved the finishes, the performance of the movement, and we invented a new function, so it's a very up-to-date collection that has a vintage touch," says Stephane Belmont the brand's patrimony director. What to Know About Smart Watches

Gambar
© Guido Mieth/Getty Images Just about every sci-fi movie includes a moment when one of the characters talks into a device on their wrist to find out their location, start their vehicle or communicate with friends or family. Technology has finally caught up to cinema in the form of smart watches. What Is a Smart Watch? Smart watches can tell time, of course, but they do a lot of other useful things as well. Although functions vary widely from watch to watch, here are some of the things smart watches can do: Make calls; Connect to your virtual assistant, such as Alexa or Siri; Check your heart rate; Track sleep patterns; Use GPS to track or find your location; Alert you to reminders; Add dates to your calendar; Count calories burned; Perform compass functions; Detect falls; Alert you when noise around you could damage your ears; Menstrual cycle tracking; Music streaming; Music storage. Tag Heuer's Golf-Inspired Watch Looks Just as Good Off the Links

From Esquire You could write what I know about golf on a golf ball. I only recently found out, for instance, that actually Titleist is not in fact pronounced "Tit-Leist." Who knew? I do know, however, that the latest iteration of Tag Heuer's Connected watch comes loaded with specialist functionality specifically devoted entirely to the game of gentlemen (and, less appealingly, Donald Trump). Tag Heuer was the first luxury watch brand to cotton on—and fast—to the smart watch revolution that began with the Apple watch in 2015. While most in Swiss watchmaking dismissed the Apple watch as a flash in the pan (nope), or at best a sideshow for techies (nope), Tag Heuer saw interesting possibilities in the new technology and decided very early on it was better to be in on it than not. Less than seven months after the Apple watch launched in April 2015, Jean-Claude Biver, then President of LVMH's watch division and watchmaking's legendary force of nature, debuted Tag Heuer

Samsung next smartwatch to be called Galaxy Watch 3

Gambar
Samsung has been investing in the smartwatch segment for quite some years nows. In counterpart to other companies using Qualcomm's Snapdragon Wear Platform and Google's WearOS, the Korean firm has been sticking with its in-house Exynos chipsets and Tizen OS for wearables. The company keeps tracing a path that is out of the curve, and for that reason, it achieved great success trailing a path similar to Apple and its Apple Watch offerings. Now, the company is gearing up to unveil a new smartwatch to fill the 2020 gap. While previous rumors pointed to the arrival of a new Galaxy Watch 2, a new certification filing suggests that the company's next smartwatch will carry the Galaxy Watch 3 moniker. Samsung is skipping the Galaxy Watch 2, but the reasons behind this decision are uncertain. The company's next smartwatch has already been certified by a handful of regulatory agencies. The list includes the FCC, Korea's NRRA, and Thailand's NBTC. For that reason,

Oura Smart Ring Detects COVID-19 Early and is 90% Accurate

Wearable technology has remained relatively niche despite the growing popularity of smart watches and fitness trackers. That's certainly the case with smart rings, a technology that has been around for years but remains nascent. In March, a new smart ring called the Oura promised to help detects COVID-19 early in users. Following a few months of research, it seems that the ring does indeed have the capability of detecting the virus early. Developers of the Oura teamed with researchers from West Virginia University's (WVU) Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute (RNI) and WVU Medicine. In a paper detailing their findings, the researchers say the ring detects COVID-19-related symptoms up to three days early. Furthermore, its results have 90% accuracy. One of the challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic has been diagnosing people fast enough. If the virus is caught earlier, sufferers can be isolated and treated sooner. Users can wear the Oura ring and choose to tra
