KEY POINTS The Apple Watch Series 6 is said to feature MicroLED displays A leaker with somewhat accurate track record says it won't The Series 6 will feature OLED panels, the leaker said Recent rumors about the Apple Watch Series 6 claim that it will have a new kind of display called MicroLED, along with other enhancements. A leak from an anonymous leaker of details about Apple's products, however, reveals that it won't feature the new component. According to a Twitter tipster named @L0vetodream, the "Apple Watch [Series 6] will continue [to] use the display from JDI." The leaker did not indicate what display this is, but it's an OLED panel, MacRumors reported. JDI, along with other suppliers, has supplied Apple with OLED panels for use in its Apple Watch models, MacRumors noted. JDI, however, has seen a steady increase in the volume of display orders. It has also enjoyed a $200 million investment from Cupertino so that it can produce more OLED display units f...

Not Just a Pretty Face: The Fascinating History of Smart Watches

Gambar
Anyone who has worn a Fitbit or a similar device tends to feel a near-religious compulsion to complete the obligatory 10,000 steps per day. The figure of 10,000 steps isn't enormously scientific: it was actually created for a primitive pedometer in Japan in the 1960s, amid a nationwide health obsession during the run-up to the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. The device, known as a "manpo-kei", translated roughly as a "10,000-step counter". But there is still little evidence that this is the "perfect" number (as compared to, say, 12,000), beyond Fitbit's distinctive tingle (and on-screen fireworks) to tell the wearer they've hit their goal. Research by PwC (Pricewaterhouse Coopers) in 2016 showed that health was the number one reason for users to buy a wearable device. This demand for ever more health information has defined new generations of smartwatches. As heart rate monitors became more practical to put into devices, these have offered wearers new hor...

Social-distancing smart watches and plexiglass beach boxes: Old and new technologies are being employed to keep people apart

Gambar
As countries emerge from lockdowns there is a worldwide rush to fit shops, offices, and public places with the tools needed to enforce social distancing. Sales of plexiglass screens have surged and technologies from social distancing wristbands to scanners tracking the capacity of rooms are in high demand as people look for safe routes out of lockdown. The U.K. government announced on Monday that lockdown measures would further ease from the beginning of June, opening car showrooms, outdoor markets, and all shops later in the month. Meanwhile all 50 U.S. states have begun reopening leaving businesses looking at measures to keep workers and customers safe. While high-tech solutions are proving popular, simple see-through plastic sheets have seen surging sales and plexiglass sheet manufacturers have reported demand rocketing. Supermarkets, cinemas and even airplanes are introducing plastic sheets to keep customers and employees apa...

I Miss Microsoft's Smartwatches That Were Too Smart for Their Time

Gambar
Apple was the first company to make smartwatches a product consumers actually wanted, but there was a time, not too long ago, when Microsoft could have defined the future of wearables. The company's SPOT platform took a deceptively simple but clever approach to wireless connectivity years before technologies like Bluetooth, wifi, and even LTE were commonplace. It also came with tradeoffs, however, that ultimately doomed the platform, but not before it succeeded in demonstrating to the world the potential of smart wearables. You can argue that the multi-function calculator watches from the likes of Casio that defined '80s nerd culture were smartwatches, but today we tend to reserve that label for wearables that offer smartphone connectivity and wireless access to remote content. Eleven years before the first-generation Apple Watch was released, watches powered by the Microsoft SPOT platform—short for Smart Personal Objects Technology—arrived and were the first to wirelessly del...
